Wake me up when September ends ~ Green day

This song by Green Day is inspired by Billie Joe Armstrong’s experience of his father’s death. The only thing he said afterwards was “wake me up when September ends”. This is how the name of the song was originated.

It’s the first song I listened to when I heard about Green Day and I fell in love with the band from that point onwards. Even though the song has a sad meaning behind it, I loved it because of the melodies and guitar in the background. It’s one of the songs I would like to learn to play on the guitar.

Yellow – Coldplay

I know this isn’t really a rock or a grunge song but you can’t deny it is a good song. When I think of Coldplay I always think of Yellow (and some other songs but mainly yellow) because of how catchy it is. It definitely wasn’t the first Coldplay song I’d ever listened to but when I heard it I started to listen to other Coldplay songs because of how much I enjoyed the song.

The first line was created purely by coincidence when the band were looking at the sky during the evening at the stars. The co-producer, Ken Nelson, asked the band to look at the stars which is what inspired Chris Martin, the lead singer, to write the melody which starts “look at the stars, look how they shine for you”.

Even though the song isn’t really in the rock and grunge genres of music, you can’t deny it’s still a really good song.

Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

This is one of my favourite Queen songs of all times. It’s written by the amazing Freddie Mercury, and was on the A Night at the opera album. It’s an incredible 6 minutes long song by Queen and it is one of the few progressive rock songs from the 1970s. Not surprisingly the song topped the UK singles chart for 9 weeks.

As many of you may know, the song was the title of the Queen biopic which was incredible. If someone ever asked me what’s the best Queen song to listen to I would always say Bohemian Rhapsody because of how much it just showcases the band and Freddie’s songwriting ability.

Livin on a prayer ~ Bon Jovi

I’m back with another classic, one I actually know mind. Okay so Livin on a Prayer by Bon Jovi… Absolute CLASSIC and in my opinion a masterpiece created by this band. My memories of this song originate from playing guitar hero with my brother and him completely destroying me but yet it was always my favourite song.

Right so the meaning of this song is a working class couple who struggle to make ends meet, something everyone in this days economy will agree they have most likely experienced this. Bon Jovi intended this song to be a motivational anthem and honestly I completely agree that this song is an anthem and it is a motivational one at that. It’s a song that is usually being played through my headphones when I’m studying because it’s just that much of an iconic song which gets me through homework and the dreaded revision that we all have to do.

The kill- thirty seconds to mars

The kill by thirty seconds to marsis an emotionally intense rock song that delves into themes of self-reflection inner conflict and personal transformation. The lyrics explore the idea of confronting ones own fears identity and the destructive aspect of life. The narrator seems to struggle with an internal battle contemplating the metaphorical “killing” of their former self to overcome emotional turmoil and start anew.

The song builds intensity with soaring vocals and powerful instrumentation making it an anthem for those facing inner struggles or striving for personal growth. Its often seen as both cathartic and empowering. The accompanying music video further enhances these themes featuring a narrative of isolation and confrontation both literal and symbolic.

The year 3000 – BUSTED

Okay this is definitely an all time classic from BUSTED (I totally realised it was BUSTED when I listened to it just now 😅😅). This is song is as it says on the tin about the year 3000… WOW that’s so crazy. But seriously this song is a classic and honestly is the only BUSTED song I can name of the top of my head as I’m not really a BUSTED fan.

This song was the second single for the band from their debut studio album named “Busted”. The song is originated from one of the band member’s obsession with Back to the Future, don’t ask me which one I have absolutely no clue.

But yeah it’s a good song even though I didn’t realise it was by BUSTED and definitely one I’d recommend listening to cause you’ve probably heard it anyways.

Bat out of hell – meat loaf

This one of my favoriate songs by this artist as it is a really upbeat song.in this song you can near all the different instruments such as the electric guitar and the drums. Playing the electric guitar is very interesting as you have the different strings you play using a pick.

Bat out of hell is an iconic rock song known for its epic and theatrical quality. It’s a high- energy dramatic track blending hard rock and operatic elements. The song tells the story of a young man seeking freedom racing against time and fighting against the constraints of life all set against a backdrop of fast-paced rebellions imagery. The lyrics are vivid and emotional with themes of love escape and defiance. The song is built around a powerful arrangement featuring intense guitar riffs soaring vocals and a grand almost cinematic atmosphere. It’s bold and over the top style has made it a timeless classic.

Sam

Who am I?

I am Samantha a 15 year old girl who loves listening to music. One of my favourite bands/artists are the Rolling Stones, I really love how they create their music. I used to really be interested in Taylor swift but I had some life events that caused me to change my music style! Am I disappointed? No I am not disappointed about the change in my music style as I feel like that having a range of music styles is a good thing. One of my favourite songs is birds of a feather by Billie Eillish. I think that it is a good idea for everyone to explore new music styles and artists find whatever feels like you!

Dayna

Hey guys, I’m Dayna, the other half of the rock and grunge index. Like Sam, I’ve experienced changes in my music taste. Don’t get me wrong the old favourites still hit hard. Luckily I was never a Taylor Swift fan (no hate if you are a Swiftie but I don’t like her music sorry…). My first band I really found I loved was one direction but this soon was lost when I found the world of film music and subsequently musicals. I still love musicals especially Hamilton and six but music from the grunge and inde genres are where I really found the music I Iove.

I don’t just listen to music, I also play musical instruments and am the singer in a band (we do have another singer joining the band) which isn’t rock at all but more acoustic with some grungey influences when we rearrange the songs that we perform.I play the viola, violin and a touch of guitar but not much. Playing music has been what I have done for a long time!!!

I hope you find something you like on songs we’ve listened to 🙂
